The IOST Sports Physical Therapy Residency is a structured, post-professional residency program for licensed physical therapists who seek advanced training in Sports Specialty practice.
Residency Mission:
The mission of the IOST Sports Physical Therapy Residency program is to provide focused instruction and advanced clinical training to motivated physical therapists who strive to develop as preferred sports physical therapy practitioners. Each resident will receive structured mentorship from physical therapists who are Sports Clinical Specialists, specialized didactic training in key concept areas across the realm of sports physical therapy, and opportunities to deliver patient care with a variety of different athletes and athletic venues.
General Overview:
The IOST Sports Physical Therapy Residency is an immersive, 12-month program, designed to deliver a wide array of learning opportunities for aspiring sports physical therapy practitioners, to expeditiously enhance their clinical reasoning and technical skills. During this program, the physical therapy resident will deliver patient care in an out of network/cash based outpatient physical therapy clinic setting, as well as assist Sports Clinical Specialist physical therapists and Certified Athletic Trainers in the delivery of on-field patient care across various athletic venues, which will include but is not limited to the following:

Additional Notation:
Sports residents are expected to complete an emergency responder course, or be a certified Athletic Trainer or Emergency medical technician by the completion date of the residency.

- NFL and NBA Pre-Draft / Combine Preparation Services
- Training Room treatment delivery and On-field training coverage
- Local High School Athletics
- On-field practice and competition coverage
- Community Youth Sports Academies
- On-field practice, competition, and tournament coverage
Additionally, the physical therapy resident will be expected to complete structured educational training activities, which will include, but is not limited to the following:
- O’Connor Hospital Didactic presentations / learning modules
- Physical Therapy Journal review presentations and discussion
- One-on-One Mentorship / Case Review meetings with Sports Clinical Specialists
- Physician Shadowing / Observation in a variety of practice settings
- Strength and Conditioning Professional Shadowing / Observation
- Physical Therapy Research Opportunities (poster presentation submission)
- Teaching experience (serve as a teaching assistant for live continuing education courses presented by Residency Mentors/Staff)
